1976 American League Cy Young winner Jim Palmer one of the best
Jim Palmer was born in New York, New York in 1945. Palmer’s parents could not have had any idea as to what Palmer would become when he grew up. Many people look back and remember Palmer as one of the greatest pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball.
People remember Palmer in such a good light for good reason: He was simply one of the best pitchers throughout his career with the Baltimore Orioles.
Palmer began his career with the Baltimore Orioles in 1965 and spent the better part of the next 20 years playing with the Orioles. Today we live in a world here the best players in the league tend to switch teams throughout the course of their careers in pursuit of winning championships. Palmer did not need to go anywhere else as he managed to help his team with the World Series in 3 different decades.
Palmer is one of very few pitchers that has managed to pitch at such a high level in 3 different decades. He not only pitched at a high level for a long time, but he also did something remarkable in doing it all for the same team.
The Orioles were the beneficiaries of 268 wins over the course of his career with a career ERA of 2.86. During his time with the Orioles he amassed 2,212 strikeouts and received a number of awards.
The first award to look at would be all-star selections. Palmer was a solid pitcher throughout the course of his career, but he was fantastic in the 70s. During the 70s he managed to make the all-star team 6 different times. His selections came in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1977 and 1978. He was consistently among the top pitchers in the league throughout the decade.
Not only was he among the top players in the league throughout the decade, but he was in fact the top player in his league three separate times throughout the decade. The top pitcher in the league is given the Cy Young Award. Cy Young was one of the great pitchers of all-time. During the 1970s, Palmer managed to bring home the Cy Young Award 3 different times.
The first Cy Young Award came for Palmer in 1973. He was a dominant pitcher and had already made the all-star team the previous three seasons. Interestingly enough, Palmer actually did not make the all-star team in his first season as a Cy Young Award winner.
Palmer followed up his success in 1973 by winning the award again in 1975 and 1976. Interestingly enough, 1976 was another season in which Palmer won the Cy Young Award, but he was not chosen for the all-star team.
In 1990, the star pitcher was chosen for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He received votes from 92.6 percent of voters on the first ballot. His number, 22, was retired by the Orioles after his career was over and he is remembered by many as the best pitcher to ever pitch for Baltimore in the history of their franchise.
