If the Growth Hormone is known to heal injury, why didn’t Andy Pettitte ask a doctor to prescribe it legally?

I don’t understand this. He looks he genuinely believed that he took hGH to heal the injury. But why did he take the illegal route?

Most legitimate physicians are not going to prescribe HGH for faster healing of an injury due to the long term effects. Individuals taking HGH are prone to serious health issues down the road such as cancer and liver problems.

If someone has a problem healing properly, HGH may be used. But no self respecting doctor is going to prescribe HGH just to help a player get back into the game faster. That is counter productive in the long run. Besides – HGH has never been approved by the FDA for healing injury or enhancing athletic performance. Doctors are going to seriously think about prescribing it for that purpose.
