Detroit Lions And The Record Nobody Wanted
There have been a lot of excellent seasons within the National Football League (NFL) – seasons in which teams and players have accomplished the seemingly unthinkable and established records that would have once been considered unlikely. The 2008 year or so turned out to be that sort of couple of years as a single group set a record that stunned the football globe. The team was the Detroit Lions, along with the record was one that all of the other teams from the League sincerely hope they never match. In that year, the Lions managed to lose each regular season game in which they played, setting a new low for NFL teams of zero wins and sixteen losses.
The history in the winless season
Think it or not, heading winless was not that uncommon inside early days of the NFL. The decade on the 1920s resulted in one particular or a lot more teams heading without a win in each season. Soon after that period and until Planet War II, the winless season became more of an oddity, with only the Cincinnati Reds team of 1934 going devoid of a win (in their defense, the team went under right after the initial eight games, and could have possibly won 1 or a lot more of their remaining three contests). Inside the course of Planet War II, the Lions lost all eleven of their games in 1942, the Chicago Cardinals went zero and ten in 1943, and a united Cardinal-Pittsburgh group lost their only ten games of 1944. The 1960 Dallas squad and 1976 Tampa Bay group also went winless, as did the Baltimore Colts in 1982 – though the latter’s period as shortened due to the NFL strike. From that point onward, no group had gone winless until the Lions of 2008.
Nobody expected success
It need to be noted that no just one expected the Detroit Lions to compete for any variety of championship in 2008. The team has been in a sad state for some time now, and also the notion that it could have even vied for its divisional title was inconceivable. Still, from the last quarter century there has not been an NFL team that has not found a way to win at least a single game during a year or so. The idea that the Lions would accomplish the feat was made all the far more unthinkable by the simple fact that they won all four of their pre-season games – a fact that should be noted by the a single or two delusional fans out there who still think that the pre-season has any sort of meaning.
Chances lost
The most memorable part from the couple of years would be the opportunities that the Lions had to avoid their winless results. Their week-six game against the Vikings was certainly within reach, as the Lions lost by only two, and several other games were within ten or fewer points. Even inside last contest with the season against Green Bay, the Lions were inside game for virtually the entire sixty minutes of play. Their failure to stop the Packers from scoring in the fourth quarter, on the other hand, was an almost fitting end to what will usually be remembered as one of the worst seasons in any team’s history in the NFL.
