Avs fan, please explain how Roy is a better goalie than Plante. Having seen both play their careers, Roy was a pale shadow of Plante. Statistically he isn’t close to Plante. And Plante didn’t need pads the size of the Brooklyn Bridge to compete.
Again, aside from Roy’s longevity factor giving him the most wins, what makes you think Roy is better than Plante?
If the Conn Smythe trophy had been around prior to 1965, I think there would be more than one 3x winner. As for Plante, Plante moved Montreal from perennially finishing 2nd to Detroit to finishing first. As for Montreal winning their 1986 Cup due to Roy, I beg to differ. The 1986 Canadiens were 4th overall offensively, and led the 86 playoffs in goals scored. While Roy may have been the Conn Smythe winner, it was due more to the fact that it was a team effort. It wasn’t a single-handed Roy deal.
1993……….was all Roy. He gave a mediocre hockey team a Stanley Cup (and a record 10 overtime wins).
1996…….Colorado was 2nd overall when the trade was made, and finished 2nd overall.
But aside from winning percentage (and the difference is minimal), there is no statistical evidence that supports your theory that Roy is better than Plante. The first 5 years of Roys career were in the small pad era……..and he was just a good goalie, not a great goalie.
You need to get your hands on some Plante video, preferably from the 60s. I think you’re in for a treat!
