Riots In Vancouver: Do Pictures Really Tell A Thousand Words? .

Individuals who played a role in the riots following the June 15, 2011, the Vancouver Canuck’s Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final..There are numerous Facebook pages and blogs with these photograps..  The pictures seem to be of young people (I will use this term throughout this post however I realize some of these folks may be adult and not technically “young people” under the Youth Criminal Justice Act) who headed downtown to watch the game and participate in the festivities that ended up making some incredibly poor choices that evening.These young people likely came downtown to watch the game and have fun and were not members of the anarchist group known as the “black bloc” that appeared to have started the riot. Rather they made the poor decision to join in on the destruction once it got going..Many have posted names of those in the photos as well as extremely detailed biographical information..The web will contain this information for years to come..

There is a clear mob mentality going on amongst the good people of Vancouver against these young people..  Assuming they are found to have played an actual destructive role in the riot I am in no way suggesting there should not be serious consequences, such as Criminal Code charges of mischief and damage to property.  For those who harmed other individuals, they may face the Criminal Code charge of assault.  Public villification may not be the appropriate response though.  These young people, many of which would have the fact of any charge protected from publication under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, are now largely revered throughout Vancouver.  They are all over the Internet.A simple Internet search will find this information. This could be very detrimental if the search is done by a potential employer or post-secondary admissions committee..  In the whole scheme of things, I question whether there transgressions is worthy of such publicity while many of those charged with much more serious criminal acts, or even those who behave questionably and unethically but do not break any criminal laws, will go largely unnoticed.Assuming the public has the story correct, one could argue that such public attention is a means of justice that is fair and reasonable..
