Dave Roberts

Dave Roberts
Would the Red Sox still have won the World Series in 2004 if Dave Roberts never stole second?

He stole second then I think it was Trot Nixon who drove him in with a single up the middle to tie the game . . . I don’t remember if the game went into extra innings or not but then David Ortiz kept the sox alive with that walk off.

The rest if history but just how big was that stolen base in baseball history?

Think about it. The Yankees are up by a run in the bottom of the ninth. The greatest closer in post-season is on the mound. He walks Millar. Roberts pinch runs. Everyone watching at Fenway, on TV, listening on the radio, knows that Roberts is going to try to steal second. And he does. Barely. Then Mueller loops a single, Roberts scores to tie the game. But if you remember, the Red Sox had other men on base and threatened to win it in the 9th. It was Ortiz’s home run off Quantrill* in the 12th that won it. And pretty much the same story the next night. Then Bellhorn’s disputed home run and A-Rod’s interference in game 6. Game 7 was almost anti climactic, but fun. To have come back from 0-3 against the hated Yankees. Fond memories.

* I think it was Quantrill
