What Is TTA (Temporal Triangular Alopecia)?

TTA or temporal triangular alopecia

Temporal triangular alopecia, also known as TTA, is a congenital hair loss condition in which the patient has a limited balding area on his temples.  The condition is usually present at birth and is generally considered congenital. The balding spot may contain normal numbers of hairs, but they are all vellus and generally not visible.

Congenital temporal triangular alopecia is considered a non-scarring alopecia and if biopsied ought not to be mistaken for Cicatricial alopecia. TTA responds well to hair transplants and there are some studies which show that patients underwent a hair transplant surgery successfully with adequate coverage on their balding areas. At pretty much any age, the condition can be treated by a hair restoration surgery.

In the 1980s, there was an NBA player by the name of Spud Webb who had temporal triangular alopecia. The sides of his temples appeared to be bald, even though there were still vellus hairs there. At first, when I was a kid, I though it was his hair style. But when I saw him during an interview years later, he still had the bald spots, and then I realized it was probably TTA.

In his time, Webb, at 5 feet 7, was once the shortest player in professional basketball. He was a phenomenal dunker who, in 1986, was crowned a slam dunk champion, beating out teammate and fellow dunker deluxe, Dominique Wilkins. Spud Webb is a good example of someone with temporal triangular alopecia who rised to the top of his profession and was considered a very accomplished individual when taking into account his size. It proves to the world that people with TTA can be just as successful, if not phenomenal, professionals in society.
