Concerning Brooklyn Dodgers Don Newcombe – Should he be in the Hall of Fame?
Now before everyone starts with shallow comments, consider this: As a 31 year old rookie he was 17-8 with 3 shutouts and 19 complete games and won Rookie of the Year. A 3 time 20 game winner going 27-7 in 1956 and winner of the Cy Young Award. (First Cy Young Award given. Also only one Cy Young Award was given in the majors at that time.) Lost 2 years to the Korean War. Only played 11 season yet had a career win-lost record of 149-90. A .623 winning percentage. Add to that the fact that he had a .271 lifetime batting average (238 for 878 with 15 career home runs and over 100 RBI’s). Fact it, because he is black he lost half a major league career. Project another 9 or 10 seasons and what do we have? I guess what I’m saying is what in the hell is wrong with the Veterans Committee?
No.
As for your closing question, the current incarnation of the VC has shown itself to be remarkably, even unprecedentedly, stingy. If it doesn’t elect someone in the next three cycles I think the Hall will scrap it and start over, or maybe dump the concept altogether. But if this VC ever does elect a candidate, it won’t be Newcombe.

Bums No More: The Championship Season of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers $2.99 In all of sports history, there has rarely been a bond like the one that linked the Brooklyn Dodgers with their fans. And for a brief and shining moment on the sunny afternoon of October 4, 1955, Brooklyn stood still. Finally, the Dodgers, the beloved Bums, laid to… |

Black Writers/Black Baseball: An Anthology of Articles from Black Sportswriters Who Covered the Negro Leagues $24.95 In recent years baseball has recognized the talents of many black players who spent their entire careers in the Negro leagues.
