10 Best Christmas Movies of All-Time

If you’re looking for a movie to get yourself or your family into the holiday spirit, these are 10 guaranteed top picks when it comes to Xmas Movies:

10 – A Christmas Carol (1999) starring Patrick Stewart
The Charles Dickens story has been remade into several television and movie adaptations through the years, yet the tale remains the same. Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly businessman in 1840′s London whose only goal is to make more money and keep it for himself. On Christmas Eve, he sees the ghost of his deceased business partner, who tells him that he will be visited by three spirits-Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. The ghosts appear to Scrooge in an attempt to help him change his ways.

9 – Elf (2003)
I’m not usually a Will Ferrell fan, to be quite frank, I find him and his characters annoying. I actually saw this film for the first time this year, at a friend’s house. I was surprised to find myself laughing at “Buddy’s” antics, and also a little touched to see how his childlike enthusiasm worked magic on the others around him. Besides, it actually is fun to watch a really tall guy wearing a ridiculous looking green suit and tights running around New York City. I guess I’ll have to make an exception and let Elf schmaltz into my holidays from now on, although it’s not really one to share with younger kids.

8 – The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Animated
Jack Skellington, aka the Pumpkin King, is bored with the routine Halloween celebration in his town of Halloweenland. He stumbles upon Christmastown, and attempts to bring his discovery back to Halloweentown.

7 – National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) starring Chevy Chase
The cast of “Vacation” returns as the Griswold family prepares for a big family Christmas. The well-intentioned family makes a total disaster of the holiday, ruining everything they touch. A comic gem.

6 – Bad Santa (2003)
Con men Willie and Marcus join forces each year to rob department stores at Christmas by posing as Santa and his little helper. Their plans are foiled when Willie meets a troubled 8-year old boy, who teaches them the real meaning of Christmas.

5 – Scrooged (1988) starring Bill Murray
Bill Murray stars as Frank Cross, a cynical TV executive, who just can’t get into the Christmas spirit. When the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future visit him, Frank realizes it’s time to make a change.

4 – The Santa Clause (1994)
When Santa is killed, divorced father Scott Calvin is recruited to take his place and complete his Christmas rounds. Scott believes it’s all a dream, until he begins to morph into the jolly old man, much to the delight of his six-year old son Charlie.

3 – Miracle on 34th Street (1947) starring Maureen O’Hara
Schmaltzy? Sure. Love it anyway, and embrace that belief that there really is a Santa. Maureen O’Hara is of course stunningly glamorous. Black and white or colorized, it’s a great film.

2 – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) starring Jimmy Stewart
Life is falling apart for George Bailey and he begins to contemplate suicide, when his guardian angel appears to show how life would have been if he never existed. A timeless Jimmy Stewart classic that shows anything is possible with the love of friends and family.

This leads us to the number one Christmas movie to watch in 2008:

1 – A Christmas Story (1983) starring Peter Billingsley
“You’ll shoot your eye out!” Ralphie’s quest for a Red Ryder BB gun, and the aunt who thinks he’s “a perpetual four” are something we can all relate to. I find something funnier every year as I get older, layers of both irony and that child-like hopefulness tied up inextricably together, as well as the remembered frustrations of childhood. (Let’s just say I sympathize deeply with the kid brother in the snowsuit.) Jean Shepherd’s writing is transferred nicely to film, his voice comes through in Ralphie’s hopes and daydreams beautifully.

So, sit down, grab your favorite holiday treat, and settle in for a long winter’s night. I hope these films bring a little joy to you and yours this year – Merry Christmas!
