Why did they give Hamilton an RBI in the 1st inning?
For those who didn’t see it: Elvis Andrus was the runner on 2nd base, Josh Hamilton the hitter with one out; he hit a groundout to 1st base, while Andrus ran to 3rd, and then ran home taking advantage of a little distraction by Carlos Pena.
Shouldn’t the play be scored as an error for the 1st baseman that allowed Andrus to score?
An error is not charged as a result of a player hesitating to make a play.
Specific rule is as follows –
10.13 An error shall be charged for each misplay (fumble, muff or wild throw) which prolongs the time at bat of a batter or which prolongs the life of a runner, or which permits a runner to advance one or more bases.
NOTE (1) Slow handling of the ball which does not involve mechanical misplay shall not be construed as an error.
