can any tech expert help me figure out how to do this project?

I wanted to start a whole new robot project unlike anything i have done before. i wanted it to actually be useful for something. my idea was to create a wheeled robot about 5 ft with one robotic arm. now what i wanted it to do was travel from my bedroom to my kitchen (on the same floor), extract one hot chocolate mix from my cabinet then place it into the hot coa coa maker and press start, then when finished bring the glass back into my room. this may seem simple however it could be very complicated and costly. first of all i haven’t even figured out what i would use to program it with, i’m considering c++. second building the robotic arm to open my cabinet, that indeed may be the most difficult part. And what sensors would i use to detect obstacles? infrarred? my idea is extreamly difficult however i would really enjoy putting it into place. Can somebody explain how i would get this to work?

The first question I must ask you: Is the robot going to be autonomous or remote controlled? Once you answer that question you are looking at two VERY different problems. Seeing as how you are asking about sensors I am assuming you want to design an autonomous robot that will do all of this for you. I don’t know how electrically inclined you are so I will try to keep things easy…

First off as you said you need to know what types of sensors you will be using. I have found that you could use a few different sensors ranging from sonar, IR, photoresistors, or vision. Seeing as how you stated you would like it to not only avoid obstacles but also find the hot chocolate, THEN place it into the maker, AND press start you would need multiple sensors for this UNLESS you use vision. With vision you would be able to detect obstacles and find different obstacles. Now the hard part will be in the obstacle detection and item detection. You are going to have to develop a complex program that will KNOW when it reaches the cabinet, when it finds the hot chocolate and then to mix and make it. AND To bring it back. I believe if you were to do this you would need to have the vision aspect only initiate when searching for the chocolate mix. Because to do this you will need to filter out color or shapes. This is going to be difficult if you don’t have experience doing this already.

If you have experience putting robots together then mechanically it should be only slightly difficult to build the arm that will produce the correct forces and movements. You will also need sensors to monitor the arm to ensure its doing what it needs to do. Because you dont always know if the path to the cabinate will be the same or if the mix will be in the same location.

You must also know what type of hardware you will be using. Either a labtop or microcontroller. For this project I would suggest a labtop. However you must also ensure that you ahve the correct ports for the different hardware components you will be using. IE motor controllers, vision, robotic arm…

I can go on and on about the autonomous side as that is my specialty. For the remote side it would be must easier. However if you are not watching the robots movement then you will need to transmit video to your controller to ensure the robot is not going to run into anything.

I believe that this is a very indepth project to be undertaking on your own. I believe if you have a lot of time you can get this done. If you can give me more specifications for the exact functionality of the robot and whether you want it to be autonomous or remote I can guide you in the right direction. I hope this helps.
