How do you clean a autographed football helmet without loosing the worth of the signature?

I noticed the other day I have a smudge on one of my signed football helmets and have had little to no help figuring out the best way to clean it. Any advise or just being pointed in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Use the softest non abrasive rag you can find (like the ones you get with a new tv) Go over it dry as many times as needed to remove smudge. Do not touch the signature. Always remember too that a lot of light (especially sunlight) fades auto’s. Store in a low light low humidity room.
