Most people’s understanding of Costa Rica is that all you see is boundless tracts of rainforest canopy, bountiful native animals, and breathtaking white sand coastlines. The country is home to easy-going, English-speaking, well-educated locals. The environment is clean, the food is natural and modern problems seem very far away.

There is one thing that they don’t tell you in the promotional literature: The roads are in a horrendous state of disrepair.

Much has been written in Costa Rica travel guides about the dirt and rock pot-hole constellations that pass as highways, and the various explanations for the inability for the government to expand and fix the highways (easy answer: corruption). The cost of this problem reaches into the economy because of more intense vehicle wear; a typical tourist commuter van that goes to the touristy beaches needs new tires in only 4,000 miles! Also, the poor roads greatly increases the chance of suspension damage.

Several Costa Rican construction projects dealt with decades of falling behind schedule and cost extensions that were only solved by transferring ownerships of the stalled projects to outside construction firms. A primary example is the Autopista del Sol in which a Swedish construction firm finished the roadway and in return the Swedes receive sizable cut of the toll revenue

When you ride on the country roads around Costa Rica, any nationalistic cynicism against the highway becomes irrelevant and is replaced with awe that these roads could even be built. The earth pours rock, mud and felled trees across the road during the monsoon season. Never mind my own bravery; there are dudes in 18 wheeler Mack Trucks barreling down roads barely two-horses wide making turns that I wouldn’t attempt in a go-kart. In the end most people do fine. Please remember to take it easy on the speed and be cautious while driving in Costa Rica.
