Hank Bauer

Hank Bauer
What do you think of Hank Bauer?

Should he be in the hall of fame or should the Yankees retired his number? He just died not long ago. He was a nice guy that had a lot of years and memories with the Yankees. What do you think of him? and why?

Hank Bauer was a nice guy, a solid hitter and fielder who played on all of the championship Yankee teams in 1949 and into the late ’50′s. But he was not as good or better than some of his HOF teammates – DiMaggio, Mantle, Rizzuto, Berra and Ford.

I do not think his playing career (even being the winning 1966 World Series manager for the Orioles) puts him in the class of HOFers. There are many other “passed over” players in the HOF voting who will eventually be elected by the Veterans Committee before Bauer’s name is mentioned.

Ironically, Bauer’s last year with the Yankees was 1959. His #9 uniform was assumed by Roger Maris, for whom the Yankees retired #9. I do not believe the Yankees would want to share #9 between Maris and Bauer.
