Sherlock Holmes and cognition?

I’ve just read a Sherlock Holmes novel “The sign of the four” but I could not understand all the story for the first time. Is it possible I would be stupid and retarded or Sherlock’s stories are really hard to get for the first reading? I’ll read again to try to get it, I’m very worried about my cognition level.

There’s nothing wrong with your cognition. The time period when Sherlock Holmes was written is way different culturally, literally, and linguistically than the present time. It takes a while to get used to that type of writing. What may help you is when you don’t understand what a phrase means, Google it and read what comes up on your searches. Many times wikipedia or other reference sources will give you that phrase in different (e.g. more modern) words that will be easier for you to understand. By the way, if you think Sherlock Holmes is confusing, wait til you get to Shakespeare! Good Luck, re-read the novel a little slower and search out meanings you didn’t get the first time. You will enjoy the book a great deal more.
