The History Of Mixed Martial Arts

Although the sport of MMA is incredibly popular today, it had to start somewhere. The history of mixed martial arts is one that actually doesn’t go back that far. Mixed Martial Arts is a sport which actually only occurred a little over a decade ago. With the first MMA fight taking put on November 12, 1993, that goes just to show just how relatively new a sport MMA is.

Yes it has been around for over a decade but compared to other sports like basketball which was invented in 1891 and soccer in 1863, it is noticeable how short a period of time a decade is in the world of sports. Of all the fighters who took part in the initial UFC fights, one of the largest names was Royce Gracie. This was a full contact sport that some of us were not used to seeing and they discovered it interesting and exciting. One of the first widely recognized names in the sport was Royce Gracie who was by far the greatest star in the sport from the beginning.

Today athletes in MMA are much more versatile and well rounded as they study all styles of fighting in order to have the most advantage over their opponent. Today the same is not so true and instead fighters must be skilled in all different styles of fighting if they would like to stand a chance of winning. The athletes in MMA are so well rounded today that fighters from the initial UFC fights would not likely stand beside them. Gracie was the winner of UFC 1, 2 and 3 and continued to reign mutually of the big names in the game for the first five years or so after MMA was first introduced to the world.

Other members of the Gracie family are likewise in MMA and that includes his father Helio Gracie and his brother Carlos Gracie. New faces began to surface as the sport became most liked, like Ken Shamrock and Matt Hughes. The alterations from the MMA then and the MMA sport now are incredible. People get so into the UFC fight nights and even pay hundreds of thousands of dollars just to go see a live event in Las Vegas or elsewhere.
