Wish To Grow? Clear The Junk! (Part 1 Of 2)

It is not uncommon with inventive individuals — and entrepreneurs are virtually always in that group — to hold on to excess “junk” because they “simply may need it someday” or “it is too valuable to do away with”.  I am one of those “creative junk collectors”, much to the chagrin of my wife (who is the spouse of an entrepreneur, you realize).  However, I am getting “the remedy”.

After a number of years of considering this, however not acting on it, the rational person will face the reality that it really is “junk”, irrespective of how valuable it might theoretically be.  If you do not have time to transform it into something useful, it is “junk”.

This is another bit of “entrepreneurial insanity”.  However, it might, and may, be cured.  It is not hard and feels notably good when the junk is gone.    Moreover, your place of business will take on a more streamlined and efficient look.  This is always engaging to visitors which might either be purchasers, prospective clients or potential buyers of your enterprise (you never know when they will appear!)

Roger McManus, author of the recently published book, “Entrepreneurial Insanity” (Amazon) makes the case.  “The true entrepreneur is not necessarily always looking for a buyer, however, he or she is always ready for the buyer to appear.”

New alternatives and purchasers come into your life only when there is room for them.  While the logistics of this usually are not obvious, the psychological implications are.  The actual clutter (or even neatly stacked and boxed junk, might be taking over greater than physical space.  Think about how it makes you feel emotionally maybe, overwhelmed, frustrated, disorganized, perhaps even lethargic.

What is often the case is that your visual space is so stuffed with junk that you either don’t see these new opportunities, or you might be too crowded to have the ability to reap the benefits of them when they appear.

Often the key difference between a small business and an entrepreneurial one is all in the mind-set of the owner.  Shifting to entrepreneurial thinking is a major step toward business growth and personal freedom for owners.

“Entrepreneurs do not take risks, they manage risk.”    Dan Kennedy
