Anyone remember the Grind Line?
Before the introduction of the salary cap, the Red Wings had quite possibly the best checking line seen in the NHL, with Kirk Maltby at left wing, Kris Draper at center and Darren McCarty at right wing. Obviously Mac’s gone, but Maltby and Draper are still in Detroit…
Which is why I ask this: when Dan Cleary’s on that line with Maltby and Draper, does it remind you of the Grind Line’s glory days? Obviously Cleary’s no toughguy, but he’s got that same kind of grit and hustle that made that unit famous. So do you think that the Maltby-Draper-Cleary line is the second coming of the Grind Line…or should that moniker be retired? (At least until Mac comes back to Detroit…if he ever does…)
Nah, its not the grind line without McCarty. Who knows though, he is an FA at the end of the season. I wouldnt be surprised if he retired, but I wouldnt mind seeing him in a Wings jersey again.
