Future of veterans in Pittsburgh?
What is going to happen to Gary Roberts and Mark Recchi? Will they stay one more year, will they call it quits, or will they go to another team? If they come back, what will be their impact on the success of the young stars of Pittsburgh?
Pens’ GM Ray Shero said this week that he wants to re-sign both Recchi and Roberts, beginning talks with them as soon as the next week or two. While it had been rumored that Roberts wouldn’t mind ending up with Ottawa or Toronto to be closer to his family, there is a very good possibilty that he’ll stay with the Pens. Both Recchi and Roberts had a tremendous impact in the dressing room, and provided a great deal of leadership for the Pens. Roberts’ play in the playoffs did not indicate any appreciable loss of his hockey skills, and Recchi had an overall solid year. If they do come back, expect them to continue having a positive influence on the team.
