The Rams have a long history from the NFL, having begun play in Cleveland in 1936. They have been a rather mobile team through their history, moving from Cleveland to Los Angeles in 1946, and then from Los Angeles to Anaheim in 1980 just before ultimately relocating to Saint Louis in 1994. The team’s mobility might are already foreshadowing of the mobile offense they would employ from 1999 to 2001 – an offense that earned the apt nickname “The Best Present on Turf.” Though the Display didn’t have the staying power of previous dynasties like the 1940s Bears, 1960s Packers, or 1970s Steelers, there is no arguing that it was a single in the most dazzling displays of offensive efficiency that the sport had ever seen.

The beginnings

The Best Present on Turf got its start when the Rams’ quarterback Trent Green went down with an injury in the preseason campaign of 1999. Rallying around backup quarterback Kurt Warner – a former Arena Football star, the Rams went on to score 526 points during the ’99 campaign. That record-setting performance would only stand for a single year, as the Rams would break it with a 540 point season in 2000. That 1999 season resulted in a 13-3 overall record and a trip to Super Bowl XXXIV against the Tennessee Titans. Warner passed for additional than 400 yards while in the game, plus the Rams won 23-16.

The Best Show

The Greatest Show on Turf could not have happened without the personnel that the Rams employed on the field. The offensive program involved passing patterns that sent five receivers – a single of which was typically their running back Marshall Faulk – across the length and width on the field. The entire scheme relied upon crisp pattern running through the receivers, reliable pass protection in the offensive line, and pin-point accuracy from the quarterback. Once the ball was delivered into space, the receiver was positioned to turn and run for extra yardage. In addition to Kurt Warner along with the aforementioned Marshall Faulk, the other essential offensive weapons that formed the cast of the Finest Demonstrate on Turf were receivers Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Az-Zahir Hakim, as well as the older Ricky Proehl.
