Why is it that today’s major league pitchers need five days of rest between starts? Did Negro Leagues rest?

I’ve heard stories of Negro League pitchers pitching both halves of a double header.

Not just in the Negro leagues, but in the MLB as well, pitchers in the old days would pitch more, and almost every starter would pitch out of the bullpen when they were not starting. Now, there are specialty pitchers because team can afford to pay guys to do a limited role, so starters don’t have to be available every day. Starters still throw every day except the day after their start, but they throw side sessions, bullpen session, and flat hat drills on there off days. Also, through trial and error and medical research, it has been determined that MLB pitchers are more effective with 4 days rest.
