Introduction To Country Music

Country music was firstly called “Country and Western Music” or was sometimes referred to as “Country-Western”. Country music evolved in the 1920’s in the South United States and Canadian Maritimes and are a blend of traditional and popular music within the said areas. Elvis Presley, also formerly known as “The Hillbilly Cat” and Garth Brooks, who became the top domestic solo artist in the United States, are two top selling artists that Country music produced.

In the 1940’s the phrase, “Country Music”, gained popularity and was wildly enhanced in 1970’s Country music are very common in countries such as the United Kingdom and Ireland. The phrase “Country and Western Music” declined in use in the 1970’s. The origins of this genre’s recordings were founded with Appalachian fiddle players in the late 1910’s and in the 1920’s when it became a recording genre. In 1922 Victor Records recorded the first commercial album when they when they recorded Eck Robertson. In 1924, Vernon Dalhart became the first artist to record a top country hit. Victor Records gave birth to Country Music in 1927 when they signed Jimmie Rogers and The Carter Family.

Country music consists of different styles, each with its unique sound A few popular sounds or sub-genre is Nashville country music. Bluegrass Country was most commonly associated with Bill Monroe. Bob Wills used Western Swing Country as his unique style and sound. The Bakersfield sound was started by Buck Owens. Then there is the Outlaw Country, made famous by well known country singer, Willie Nelson. Honky Tonk, Alternative and Rockabilly is also other sub-genres of country music. Each has their own unique style, sound, execution, use of rhythms and chord structures.

Country music is a very simple genre to play. The songs consist of basic chords and are commonly played by instruments such as the guitar, including paddle steel guitar, fiddle, banjo and the harmonica. As one can see, country music is very easy to play and produce by anyone who has a love for this kind of genre. Country Music are also played using less instruments than other genres.

In today’s age, many Country Music artists can be found. Each artist has his or her own unique style. Creating the Pop Country sub-genre was Dolly Parton, who added a pinch of pop to her style and sound. With her 2009 top hit, “Love Story”, Taylor Swift joined the ranks in Pop Country. Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter, Miley Cyrus a.k.a. Hannah Montana are also another addition to this sub-genre. With their album “I Need You Now”, Lady Antebellum also joined the Country Music artist wall.

While Country Music is mostly common in the United Kingdom, Ireland and United States, other countries also produced high quality country singers. Australian country artists started their own unique style and sound and thus gave birth to the Australian Country sub-genre. Between the 1950’s and 1970, South Africa also produced a lot of country artists thus creating the Afrikaans Country sub-genre and still to this day produces artists in this sub-genre.

Anyone is able to play country music and produce their own sound, with country guitar lessons. Who knows, maybe you will become the next country singer or artist, which introduces a whole new sub-genre or become the next Taylor Swift or Keith Urban.
