Illegal to take photos in a train station?

I was told to stop taking photos in Manchester Piccadilly train station. This was for a university assignment. I was told to delete the photos I had already taken. Was I breaking the law? Could I have been arrested if I didn’t stop or delete the photos?

This is in USA Answers, btw.
I know that here, they can’t legally arrest you for things like that, but different towns find ways to do so.
It’s kind of sad that street photography is nearly illegal these days!
In places like England, I imagine that a guy with a camera is a target for someone that is likely scoping something for a terrorist raid or suicide bomb. I do understand the over-reaction, but your personal liberties are at stake to protect you from threats like train bombs, etc..
Honestly, I think in cases like these, the authorities are most likely just over-reacting.
