If I want to create a post-card, what color profile should I use to ensure best print compatibility?

I don’t know much about color management, but I want to start creating post cards. I need to know what color profile I should send the PSD file with to the printer. Does this even matter for the printer, or does it only matter for what it looks like on my screen?

i have worked with photoshop and also had some post cards printed, i use CMYK color mode… i think you can do with that.. and also use resolution around 300dpi to ensure good quality
