Signed Big

How much do UK singers signed to big labels typically earn?
For example what would Natasha Bedingfield of earnt for her first album? She signed a deal with Sony BMG for £500,000 for 2 albums, so how much of this would she actually see after tax and deductions? Her debut sold around 2.5 million worldwide and as she co-wrote the entire record, what sort of percentage would she take home after tax and deductions? She’s with RCA records so they’re a big label, so I’m guessing she gets around 15% per sale of each album and single. Please help!
If she writes her own songs, she’d get about 15%, if she only sang them, then about 8%. The £500K is irrelevant – that’s just the money that the record company advances towards the cost of making and marketing the album. NB I think does write her own songs, so if the 2.5m albums sell for £9 a pop, then she gets about £3.7million, minus any additional costs that she’s incurred with the record co. Of course, this model means that a singer who sells nothing gets paid nothing…

Avenged Sevenfold $3.57 Avenged Sevenfold’s fourth full-length is little more than a workaday hard rock record replete with songs tailored for the innards of hockey rinks and basketball arenas. The nu-metal bellowing and angst-filled posturing quickly wear thin, rendering tracks such as “Scream” and “Afterlife,” and the opening “Critical Acclaim,” nearly interminable. Sure, “Gunslinger,” “A Little Piece of Heaven,” and “… |

A Knight’s Tale (Special Edition) $2.49 There’s no rule against rock anthems from the 1970s in the soundtrack for a movie about a medieval jousting champion, but if you’re going to attempt such jarring anachronisms, you’d better establish acceptable ground rules. Writer-director Brian Helgeland does precisely that in A Knight’s Tale and pulls off this trick with such giddy aplomb that you can’t help but play along. (Upon witnessing a cr… |
