is matted fur a sign of sickness?
I was going to adopt a stray cat last year, and he had lukemia, so I had to put him down. I had my cats tested and they were fine then. Can it show up later, or should I have them retested? It is only the one cat.
Neglect, yes and not necessarily on the part of the owner. When cats are old (with arthritis) or not feeling well they do not have the energy to keep themselves groomed successfully.
I would certainly have a vet check over the cat’s general health. The only cat I have had with a mat “problem” lost it when he was converted to an all-meat diet. I had my 17 yr old rescue cat (who died of oral cancer) for a year and though his former owner said he had a problem with mats he never had one in the year that he was with me and had better quality food.
I would comb and brush both cats about five times a week – mostly because we all enjoyed the procedure.
My 22+ year old cat got regular trips to the groomer about every month or six weeks for three or four years before she died. She was very arthritic and didn’t groom herself anymore.
