The University Of Colorado Buffaloes Football
History
Colorado Buffaloes football has been in existence sine 1890. The program has compiled a record of 665-435-36 in 119 years of play. That accumulates to a winning percentage of just under 61%. They rank #16 in total wins all time & also a 22nd ranking with that winning percentage. The Buffs play at Folsom Field which has been the home of the Colorado football since 1924.
The team has played in a total of 27 bowl games with a record of 12-15 in those games. The school even has a national championship title back in 1990. Actually, the title was split with Georgia Tech. The head coach of that team was Bill McCartney. He coached the Buffaloes for 13 seasons.
Colorado currently plays in the Big 12 conference. They’ve been a member of this conference since 1996. However, in June of 2010, Colorado accepted an invitation to play in the PAC-10 conference. The switch will not take effect until the 2012 season.
Notable Former Players
Colorado has quite a few former players that played in the NFL as well as some current NFL players. Some of the more noted current NFL players are Mason Crosby(K), Justin Bannan(DT), Tyler Brayton(DE), Andre Gurode(C),& Chris Brown(RB). These are just to name a few. Chris Brown was a well known figure in Colorado during his days as a running back.
Some of the former Colorado & NFL players are Rashaan Salaam(RB,won Heisman Trophy in 1994), Eric Bienemy(RB), Chad Brown(LB), Kordell Stewart(QB), Michael Westbrook(WR),& Koy Detmer(QB). Kordell Stewart set several passing records while at Colorado. He was QB from 1991-1994.
Notable Former Coaches
Believe it or not there wasn’t a head coach during the first few seasons of the program. Harry Heller was the very first official named coach at Colorado in 1894. Fred Folsom, to whom their current stadium is named after, was the next coach. He coached the team 3 different times(1895-1899, 1901-1902, 1908-1915).
Bill McCartney was the most successful coach in football history. He leads the school with 93 total wins. He also can lay claim to the only national title in the school’s football history. He coached the team to a 93-55-5 record over his 13 years at the controls. He also coached some pretty good players during his tenure. The current head coach is Dan Hawkins. He took over in 2006. He has compiled a not so good record of 16-33 in 4 seasons. There has been pressure to get rid of him.
Notable Former Award Winners
Byron White finished 2nd in the Heisman voting back in 1937. Eric Bienemy was 3rd for Heisman back in 1990. Darian Hagan finished 5th for Heisman back in 1989. Rashaan Salaam won the Heisman back in 1994. Not only did he win this award he also won the Walter Camp Award voted for best player in college football. And, he also garnered the Doak Walker Award for best RB. Kordell Stewart finished 13th that same year in the Heisman running. In more recent years, Chris Brown finished 8th for Heisman back in 2002.
On the coaching side, Bill McCartney was given the Paul “Bear Bryant” award for best college football coach in 1990.
