Engine Stands For Auto Shops – ToolsRUs

An engine stand is a mechanic’s tool designed to hold an engine firmly in place while your rebuild or repair it. To vertically lift the engine out of the compartment, an engine crane is needed, but once it’s out, the stand is used to support it. Most commercial auto shops will have both a crane and a stand for engines. The crane features a high-strength chain from which to hang an engine. When suspended by the crane’s chain, the engine can be positioned for mounting on the stand.

Engine stands are designed to support weights ranging from about a half tonne up to three tonnes. Mechanics who work on heavy diesel engines require a very durable three-tonne engine stand. A stand rated for lighter loads will suffice for shops that specialise in sports cars or motorcycles, for instance. Versatile engine stands may be able to accommodate other components such as a vehicle axle or a transmission drive train. Depending on the needs of your home or professional auto shop, there is an engine stand that fits the bill.

Engine stands are built from high-strength welded steel with a reinforced neck to prevent bowing under the extreme weight of the block. A powder coated finish on some stands guards against corrosion. The frame of the stand may feature three or four legs depending on its design. Foldable stands provide for easier storage, while others are fixed in a single position. Engine stands feature a minimum of two heavy-duty casters. For added maneuverability, lighter stands feature four or six casters. Stands made for the weightiest of engines rest their durable frame on the shop floor but feature two casters on the frame ends. This kind of stand can only be moved by tipping it up on end, so not when an engine is mounted.

The mounting head is the component of the stand to which the engine attaches. Able to rotate a full 360 degrees, this feature allows you total access to all sides and parts of an engine. With an integral hydraulic jack found on select heavy-duty engine stands, you are able to raise the block into the proper position for rebuilding or repair.
